Importance of Vitamin B1 in Your Diet

Foods containing thiamineSo we all know how important all the nutrients are for our health. If we don’t get all of these required nutrients, we develop deficiencies. When we develop deficiencies, they can interfere with normal body functions, or they may hinder them completely. As a result of all of this, we feel sick and that is never good.

So in this article, i’m going to talk about vitamin B1 related deficiencies, how they occur and how they can be treated. Vitamin B1 is also known as thiamine. Before we talk about this important vitamins, let’s first talk about what vitamin really are.

Vitamins are those important nutritional element that play an important role in maintaining our health. They participate in many of the major and vital biochemical pathways to keep everything running as efficient as possible within our body. Without them, our body would fail to carry out those important function properly and that would lead to deficiency.

Can our body produce all the vitamins we need? This is a question that people often ask. Our body is able to synthesize some of the vitamins BUT not all. Therefore, all the vitamins that it can’t synthesize must come from our diet. We need to make sure that our diet is of high quality, or we will miss out all the important vitamins we need.

High quality is not the only thing you should be looking at. High quality PLUS the right type of foods is what you need. For example, if you believe you have thiamine deficiency, you should be consuming high quality vitamin B1 rich foods.

I would like to mention at this point that there are two major groups of population who are at an increased risk of developing thiamine deficiency. First on the list is the individuals who consume a lot of alcohol regularly and second is the people who rely on polished rich as a major food source in under developed countries.

Alcoholics are at an increased risk because alcohol decreases the absorption ability of thiamine. Alcohol interferes with the process that stops out intestines from absorbing whatever amount of thiamine that passes through. In such individuals, thiamine deficiency can be easily prevented by decreasing the amount of alcohol that is consumed. At the same time, individuals suffering from such deficiencies should start taking in more foods that are rich in this vitamin.
